To meet the ultralight camper’s demands for ever lighter gear, the folk at Big Agnes have gone back to the drawing board and cut down the weight again without sacrificing quality or performance.A couple of ways they have achieved this is by the use of smaller-gauge zippers and 15-denier nylon fly that is really tough because its fibers are double-twisted for added strength.This has enabled the Copper Spur UL 1 to achive a trail weight of just 2lb 11oz with the packed weight only adding 5oz taking it to 3lb.At these specifications you may be tempted to take the optional footprint (4.5oz) along with you to reduce abrasion and damage to the tent floor from sharp objects.An even lower fast fly weight of 2lb 2oz is available to you.
The Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 1 uses the advanced Featherlite NSL pole system from manufacturer DAC, constructed from eco-friendly anodized TH72M aluminium, with press fit connectors and lightweighthubs.This advanced eco-friendly anodizing process eliminates the need for two toxic chemicals and recycles wastewater at the plant.With a single hub/pole design, DAC’s twist clips quickly and easily attach the tent body to the pole frame.
The fly and floor are both made from ultralight silicone treated rip-stop nylon with a 1200mm waterproof polyurethane coating whilst the tent body is ultralight breathable nylon rip-stop and polyester mesh which offers excellent bug-free ventilation on the warmest summer evening.Loops are ready sewn inside to take the Big Agnes wall gear loft (available separately) for additional storage.
The Copper Spur UL 1 has a single D-shaped door and two spacious vestibules with a total area of sq ft so there is plenty to space to shelter packs boots and other equipment from the weather. A small zipper door allows access to rear the rear vestibule for increased storage space.Night time visibility has been considered by the manufacturer who has used reflective webbing on the tent corners and included reflective guy lines.
With a floor area of 22 sq ft and a generous head height of 37” this is a really roomy tent .Not only that, but you get a double walled tent which reduces condensation problems with full-on bug protection at a weight comparable to many tarp shelters and a lot more comfortable than a bivvy bag.All seams are taped with a waterproof, solvent-free polyurethane and despite packing down to a mere 6” x 18” there are 9 superlight eco-anodized aluminum J stakes included.Further size details can be found at the end of this review.
