The ACR Terrafix comes in two different models. The Terrafix 406 I finds your location using Doppler Shift technology (which is satisfactory, but not as fast or precise as using GPS coordinates), however the user has the option to plug a GPS unit into this device to transmit coordinates or just use without GPS for location.
The Terrafix 406 I/O however is much more sophisticated, containing on board GPS to acquire your GPS position to within about 100 yards prior to transmission and can also operate using the same Doppler Shift technology as the 406 I model.
How it works
When you first get your Terrafix 460 you need to register so that in the event of emergency the authorities can recognise your personalized identifier code and respond. Registration is free and there are no annual charges either.

Using the terrafix simply involves pushing a button for the unit to transmit your position along with your personalized identifier code through the SARSAT satellites (an international satellite-based search and rescue (SAR) distress alert detection and information distribution system, established by Canada, France, the United States, and the former Soviet Union in 1979) instantly alerting SAR forces that you need help, immediately! In the case of the TerraFix 406 I/O (with integral GPS) the beacon’s first burst can notify SAR forces that you are in difficulty in as little as three minutes. Transmiting on a frequency of 406 MHz (hence the 406 in the name) a second signal is also broadcast on 121.5 MHz (SAR local homing frequency) to guide rescuers on the ground and in the air to your exact position, avoiding time wasting searches over a wide area and the inevitable and potentially life threatening delay that would entail.
